FAQ - Mahi Mahi Lures

What are the best lures for mahi mahi?

Small skirted lures in the 6-9" range are the bread and butter. Daisy chains work as teasers that pull fish into your spread. Sea witch combos behind ballyhoo account for more dolphin catches than any other rig. Bright colors — pink/white, blue/white, chartreuse — outperform dark colors almost every time.

What speed should I troll for mahi mahi?

6-9 knots is the sweet spot. Slower than wahoo speed, faster than swordfish baits. At 7 knots, most skirted lures track perfectly in the prop wash. If you're pulling spreader bars, drop to 5-6 knots to keep the bars from tangling. Our trolling speed chart has species-by-species breakdowns.

How do I set up a trolling spread for dolphin?

Run 4-6 lines: two flat lines close (30-50 feet back), two rigger lines long (75-120 feet), and optionally a shotgun line way back (150+ feet). Mix lure types — a chugger up close, skirted ballyhoo on the riggers, a daisy chain as a teaser. Full setup in our trolling spread guide.

Do I need live bait or will lures work for mahi?

Lures find fish. Live bait keeps them. Troll lures until you find a weed line, debris, or color change — then switch to live bait or chunk cut bait to hold the school. If you don't have live bait, keep trolling through the school with small skirted lures. Mahi are aggressive enough that artificial works, especially for schoolies.

What color lures work best for mahi mahi?

Pink/white and blue/white are the top two. Mahi are sight feeders with excellent color vision — bright, contrasting colors trigger strikes. In dirty water, switch to chartreuse or green/yellow. Our Blue Water Candy Wedgie in blue/white is one of our best sellers for a reason.

What size hooks for mahi mahi lures?

6/0 to 8/0 O'Shaughnessy or circle hooks cover most dolphin fishing. Schoolies (under 10 lbs) do fine on 5/0. Bulls over 30 lbs need 7/0-8/0. Match your hook to your lure size and check our hook size chart for visual comparisons.

How to Pick Mahi Mahi Lures

Dolphin are the most color-aggressive pelagic you'll chase offshore. They'll eat almost anything that moves and looks wounded, but the right lure selection turns a few scattered bites into a full fish box.

Start with skirted ballyhoo rigs. A sea witch threaded over a fresh ballyhoo is the single most reliable mahi producer in the Atlantic. Run them on 60-80 lb mono leaders with a small egg sinker as a chin weight. The ballyhoo gives you scent and the skirt gives you action and flash. Most charter captains run at least two of these in every spread.

Add a daisy chain or spreader bar as a teaser to mimic a fleeing bait school. Mahi love competition. Seeing multiple "baitfish" gets them fired up and racing to your hooked offerings before the "school" escapes.

For casting to visible fish, keep a medium spinning rod rigged with a Bait Strip or bucktail jig ready at all times. When you hook one dolphin and it stays near the boat, the rest of the school usually follows within casting distance. That's when casting gear turns a single hookup into a dozen. Match your casting lure color to whatever you're trolling for best results. Full species breakdown in our mahi mahi fishing guide.
