Axis Stainless Steel Wahoo Trolling Lure by Epic Fishing Co.

The Epic Fishing Co. Axis is a high polish stainless steel wahoo lure built to run hard and take hits from the fastest fish in the ocean. At 12oz and 10.5" overall, it tracks true at speeds from 8 to 18 knots with or without a trolling weight. Every Axis ships pre-rigged on 6ft of 480lb stainless steel cable with a single 8/0 Southern Tuna hook on a stiff rig. No crimping, no assembly. Pick a color, clip it to your snap swivel, and start trolling. We rig every one by hand in North Carolina, and we back it with the same UV double skirts we run on our own boats. Five UV color patterns give you options from bluewater classics to full send bright patterns.

Outrun Every Wahoo on the Troll

Wahoo hit fast and bite hard. Cheap lure heads crack. Mono leaders get sliced in half. And if your rig isn't straight, that lure is spinning out at 14 knots while every fish in the spread ignores it. You need a lure that tracks clean at speed, survives the strike, and comes back ready for the next one.

The Axis solves all three problems. The high polish stainless steel head won't crack, chip, or corrode, and the 12oz weight keeps it digging even at 18 knots. We rig it on 480lb stainless steel cable because wahoo teeth shred mono and fluorocarbon on contact. The single hook stiff rig with an 8/0 Southern Tuna hook keeps the presentation clean and the hookup ratio high. No dangling skirts, no fouled hooks.

We designed the Axis in-house and rig every one by hand in North Carolina. It's the same lure our team runs on tournament days. Five UV color patterns cover everything from dirty green water (Mahi UV, Red/Green UV) to clean blue offshore conditions (Blue/Purple/White UV, Purple/Black/Gold UV). At $69.99, it's a fraction of the price of comparable stainless wahoo lures, and it shows up ready to fish.

High Polish Stainless Steel Construction

The Axis head is machined from solid stainless steel with a mirror-finish high polish. It measures 3.25" long and 1.125" in diameter, giving it the mass and profile to track straight at high trolling speeds. Stainless won't crack on a hard strike the way resin or acrylic heads can, and it won't corrode after seasons of saltwater use. The polished finish throws flash underwater, mimicking the reflective sides of a fleeing baitfish. At 12oz total weight, the Axis runs subsurface without a planer or heavy trolling sinker, though you can add weight if you want it deeper.

UV Double Skirts in 5 Color Patterns

Every Axis comes double skirted with Epic UV lure skirts at 7.25" skirt length. UV skirts fluoresce underwater where human-visible colors fade, giving wahoo a target they can track at speed. We offer five patterns: Purple/Black/Gold UV for classic dark contrast, Mahi UV for green-water days, Pink/Clear UV when you want something bright and subtle at the same time, Red/Green UV for dirty water, and Blue/Purple/White UV for clean offshore conditions. Double skirting adds bulk and water displacement, which creates more vibration and a bigger silhouette. We like running at least two different colors in a spread to see what the fish want that day.

Pre-Rigged 480lb Cable and 8/0 Hook

The Axis ships fully rigged on 6ft of 480lb test stainless steel cable with a single 8/0 stainless Southern Tuna hook on a stiff rig. This is not a mono or fluoro leader. Wahoo have razor-sharp teeth that cut through conventional leaders on contact. Stainless cable is the only reliable option for dedicated wahoo trolling. The stiff rig configuration keeps the hook riding straight behind the lure head, which prevents skirt fouling and gives you a clean hookset. Clip it to your snap swivel and you're fishing. No crimping tools needed, no rigging time on the water.

How to Fish the Axis Wahoo Lure

1. Clip the Axis to your snap swivel on a 50-80lb trolling rod. No additional leader needed - it's already rigged on 6ft of 480lb stainless cable.

2. Set your trolling speed between 8 and 14 knots to start. The Axis runs well up to 18 knots, but 10-14 is the sweet spot for most wahoo grounds.

3. Run it from a flat line or outrigger position, 50-100ft back. For deeper runs, add a 16-24oz trolling sinker ahead of the snap swivel.

4. Mix colors in your spread. Run a dark pattern (Purple/Black/Gold UV) on one side and a bright pattern (Pink/Clear UV or Mahi UV) on the other to let the fish tell you what they want.

5. On the strike, let the fish load the rod before touching it. The single hook stiff rig sets itself at trolling speed. Clear the other lines and fight the fish.

Which Axis color should I start with? +
If you're buying one, go with Purple/Black/Gold UV. It's the most versatile pattern and works in both clean and dirty water. If you're buying two, add Pink/Clear UV for a bright contrast option. Check our high speed wahoo trolling guide for more on color selection by water conditions.
What trolling speed works best for the Axis? +
The Axis runs clean from 8 to 18 knots. We like the 10-14 knot range for dedicated wahoo trolling, but it handles higher speeds without blowing out. See our trolling speed chart for optimal speeds by species and lure type.
Do I need to rig the Axis myself? +
No. Every Axis ships fully rigged on 6ft of 480lb stainless steel cable with an 8/0 Southern Tuna hook. Clip it to your snap swivel and fish. If you're new to trolling setups, our trolling lures for beginners guide covers the basics of setting a spread.
What's the difference between the Axis and the Axis Junior? +
The Axis is the full-size version at 10.5" overall and 12oz. The Axis Junior is a scaled-down version for lighter tackle or when wahoo are keyed in on smaller bait. Both use the same stainless steel construction, UV double skirts, and 480lb cable rigging. Run both sizes in your spread to cover your bases.
Do I need a trolling weight with the Axis? +
Not necessarily. At 12oz, the Axis runs subsurface on its own at trolling speed. If you want it deeper (below 15-20ft), add a 16-24oz trolling sinker ahead of the snap swivel. Our trolling spread rigging guide covers weight placement and depth targeting.
Can the Axis catch species other than wahoo? +
Absolutely. The Axis is designed for wahoo, but kingfish, barracuda, and tuna all hit stainless trolling lures at speed. The 480lb cable leader is overkill for most other species, but it means nothing is biting you off. Check our tuna fishing guide for more on offshore species targeting.
How durable is the stainless steel head? +
Extremely. Stainless steel won't crack on strikes like resin or acrylic heads, and it won't corrode in saltwater. The high polish finish holds up season after season. The skirts are the wear item - replace them when they get chewed up or faded. Browse our full lineup of wahoo lures or check out the Black Mirror series for a different head style.
Can I replace the hook on the Axis? +
The hook is crimped onto the 480lb stainless cable as part of the stiff rig. You can re-crimp a new 8/0 hook if needed, but you'll need proper cable crimping tools and sleeves. For most anglers, the factory rig will last a long time. Our saltwater lure types guide covers rigging options and maintenance basics.
