- 250lb or 400lb smoke blue options
- 320lb Epic BB snap swivels on each end
- Essential for high speed wahoo trolling
The Link That Saves Your Wahoo Setup
A wahoo hits your lure at 60 mph. Without a shock leader, that impact transfers straight to your line and something breaks. The heavy mono between the trolling weight and lure stretches just enough to absorb the initial shock and keep everything connected.
The 25 foot length gives the mono room to stretch under load. The smoke blue color is nearly invisible in open water. At $19.99, it is the cheapest insurance in your wahoo spread. Lose one shock leader to a bite-off and you have saved the lure, weight, and cable rig behind it.

25 Foot Length
Twenty-five feet of heavy mono provides enough stretch to absorb wahoo strikes at high speed. Shorter leaders transfer too much shock to the main line and hardware.
Smoke Blue Mono
The smoke blue color blends with offshore water. Available in 250lb for standard wahoo trolling or 400lb for heavy tackle applications.
BB Snap Swivels
320lb Epic ball bearing snap swivels on both ends let you clip in and out quickly. Change lures or weights without cutting leader.
How to Rig a Wahoo Shock Leader
1. Clip one snap swivel to the trailing end of your trolling weight
2. Clip the other snap swivel to your lure's stiff rig or leader
3. Verify both swivel clips are fully closed and locked
4. Deploy at idle speed and check that the leader does not tangle
5. Increase to trolling speed and verify the lure tracks straight
6. Inspect the leader after each fish for tooth marks and replace if damaged

Do I need 250lb or 400lb? +
250lb for standard wahoo trolling. 400lb for heavy tackle or targeting large wahoo over 60lb. Our wahoo guide covers selection.
Where does the shock leader go? +
Between the trolling weight and your lure. It is the last link before the lure. See our wahoo guide for diagrams.
Can wahoo bite through this leader? +
Wahoo teeth can cut mono. The shock leader is sacrificial. If a wahoo bites the leader, you lose the leader but save the weight and cable rig. Browse leader material.
How many do I need for a spread? +
One per trolling line. Most spreads run 4-6 lines. Stock spares. Browse our trolling lure selection.
Can I make my own shock leaders? +
Yes. Use 250-400lb mono and crimp swivels on each end. Our crimping guide covers the process.
What other components do I need for wahoo trolling? +
Trolling weights, lures, and cable stiff rigs. See our Wahoo Bullet Jet and trolling weights.
