The Easiest Way to Start Trolling

Clarkspoons have caught more Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, and bluefish than any other trolling lure. The problem has always been the rigging. You need a long leader to separate the spoon from the swivel, and that leader needs to be the right weight. This rigged version solves all of that. Open the package, unwrap the leader from the storage wheel, clip the snap swivel to your line, and start trolling.

The 24-foot, 30 lb mono leader is the correct length and weight for most nearshore trolling situations. The storage wheel keeps the leader organized in your tackle bag instead of becoming a tangled mess. When the bite is on and you want to get a spoon back in the water fast, a rigged Clarkspoon saves you critical time.

24-Foot Leader on Storage Wheel

The 24-foot mono leader gives you proper separation between the spoon and your mainline. This distance is critical for keeping wary fish from spooking off the snap or your planerboard. The storage wheel keeps the leader tangle-free so you can deploy and retrieve cleanly.

Three Sizes for Different Species

Size 00 is the smallest and ideal for Spanish mackerel in close. Size 0 is the all-around choice for Spanish and small kings. Size 1 is the largest and targets king mackerel and bigger bluefish. Carry all three and match the size to what the fish are eating that day.

Gold and Silver Options

Gold spoons produce best in stained or green water where the warm flash stands out. Silver is the choice for clear water and bright conditions. Most experienced trollers carry both and let the fish decide. At these prices, there is no reason not to have a few of each.

How to Troll a Rigged Clarkspoon

1. Unwrap the leader from the storage wheel and straighten any coils by stretching gently

2. Attach the snap swivel to your trolling rod line or planerboard clip

3. Let out the full 24 feet of leader plus additional mainline to get the spoon 40-80 feet back

4. Troll at 3-6 knots - the spoon should wobble and flash without spinning

5. For deeper presentation, add an inline trolling weight or use a planer

6. When a fish strikes, reel steadily and avoid jerking - the single hook holds better with steady pressure

What size Clarkspoon should I use? +
Size 00 for Spanish mackerel, Size 0 for Spanish and small kings, Size 1 for king mackerel and bluefish. When in doubt, Size 0 is the most versatile. Our trolling lure guide covers size selection in detail.
Gold or silver Clarkspoon? +
Silver for clear water and sunny days. Gold for stained water, cloudy skies, or green water. Carry both and swap if one is not producing. Our saltwater lure guide explains color selection by water clarity.
How fast should I troll Clarkspoons? +
3-6 knots is the productive range. The spoon should wobble and flash, not spin. If it spins, slow down slightly. Check our trolling speed chart for exact speeds by species.
Do I need additional weight with a Clarkspoon? +
For surface feeding fish, no. If fish are deeper, add an inline trolling weight or clip to a planer board. The 30 lb leader handles the added weight fine. Our trolling spread guide covers adding weight to your trolling setup.
Can I use Clarkspoons offshore? +
Clarkspoons are primarily a nearshore lure, but they produce on blackfin tuna and skipjack offshore too. Size 1 in gold is a solid offshore option. Read our blackfin tuna guide for trolling tactics.
Why is a long leader important? +
Fish spook from hardware. The 24-foot leader puts distance between the snap swivel and the spoon so wary fish do not see the connection. This is especially important for Spanish mackerel, which have sharp eyesight. See our leader FAQ for more on leader length.
