Quiet Sub-Surface Action

Not every fish wants to eat on the surface. The Flat Head 8 runs below the wake where the water is calmer and the lure action is more subtle. The flat face pushes water without the violent popping of a cupped head, creating a smooth swimming action that mimics a baitfish cruising below the surface.

The crystal clear resin with mirror insert still catches light, but the flash comes from below the surface where fish are actually looking. Run this on the long rigger or off a downrigger clip where a deeper, quieter presentation puts the lure in front of fish that are not looking up.

Flat Face Sub-Surface Design

The flat head pushes water and runs the lure below the surface wake. This puts the lure in the strike zone of fish feeding at depth rather than on top.

Crystal Clear Resin with Mirror

Same quality resin and mirror insert as the Cup Head. The light refraction and flash work below the surface just as effectively as on top, catching fish eyes from a wider viewing angle.

Double Skirts

Vibrant double skirts provide profile and flash in the sub-surface zone. The mirror insert in the head and the skirt flash work together to create a presentation visible from multiple angles below.

How to Troll the Epic Flat Head 8

1. Rig with your preferred hook setup on 60-100 lb leader

2. Deploy from a long rigger or downrigger position

3. Troll at 5-9 knots for standard offshore species

4. The flat head should swim smoothly below the surface

5. Vary letback distance to find the productive depth

6. Mix with Cup Head lures for complete depth coverage

When should I use Flat Head vs Cup Head? +
Use the Flat Head for sub-surface presentations on the long rigger or downrigger. Use the Cup Head for surface popping on the short rigger or flat line. Run both for a complete depth spread.
Is this good for tuna? +
Yes. Tuna often feed below the surface and respond well to sub-surface lures with flash. Read our tuna guide for techniques.
Can I get these in a spread kit? +
Yes. The Mahi Tuna Six Pack includes a mix of Epic lures for a complete spread at $279.99.
What colors work best sub-surface? +
Blue/white and pink/white are popular sub-surface colors. The mirror insert adds flash regardless of color. Try dark colors in deep water and bright colors in shallow water.
What leader should I use? +
60-100 lb fluorocarbon or mono leader depending on target species. Read our leader FAQ for species-specific recommendations.
Does this work for wahoo? +
Yes, when run at higher speeds (8-12 knots) on a downrigger or heavy weight. Add a wire trace for wahoo teeth. See our wahoo guide.
