Bulk Chafe Gear

Every crimped connection on your leader is a potential failure point. Chafe gear wraps that connection in protective tubing so rocks, structure, and toothy fish don't saw through your work before the fight is over. Epic Fishing Co. Bulk Chafe Gear comes in 10ft rolls so you always have material on hand. Size A handles 130-300lb mono and cable up to 480lb (1/16" stainless). Size B steps up to 300-600lb mono and 3/32" stainless cable. At $12.99 per roll, you get more usable material than buying pre-cut packs. Cut the exact length you need for every connection, every time.
  • Size A: Fits 130-300lb mono, cable up to 480lb (1/16" SS)
  • Size B: Fits 300-600lb mono, 3/32" SS cable
  • 10ft Bulk Rolls: Cut to length, no waste
  • Protects: Crimps, swivels, snaps, and leader junctions

How to Crimp Fishing Leaders: Step by Step

Protect Your Connections, Keep Your Fish

You spent 20 minutes building a perfect leader. Double crimps, quality sleeves, the right pound test for your target. Then a bull dolphin greyhounds across the surface and your leader drags across the outrigger clip, the transom, or its own gill plate. Without chafe gear over those crimps, one rough spot can weaken the connection enough to pop on the next run. Chafe tubing is cheap insurance. It takes 30 seconds to slide on before you crimp, and it can be the difference between a fish in the box and a story about the one that broke off. Stock the bulk roll so you never skip this step because you ran out.

Two Sizes, 130-600lb Coverage

Size A fits 130-300lb monofilament and stainless cable up to 480lb (1/16" diameter). Size B steps up to 300-600lb mono and 3/32" stainless cable. Between the two sizes, you can protect every leader in your spread from light trolling setups to heavy swordfish rigs.

10ft Bulk Roll Saves Money

Most chafe gear comes in 5 or 10 piece pre-cut packs. You pay more per foot and you are stuck with one cut length. The 10ft bulk roll lets you cut exactly what each connection needs. Shorter pieces for crimp covers, longer sections for swivel-to-hook runs. One roll handles multiple leader builds.

Abrasion Protection Where It Counts

Crimped sleeves, swivel connections, and snap junctions are the weakest points on any leader. Chafe tubing adds a protective barrier at each of these spots. It prevents mono from being nicked by rough edges and keeps cable from fraying against metal hardware. The result: your leaders last longer and hold under pressure.

How to Use Chafe Gear on Leaders

Step 1: Cut a piece of chafe tubing about 1.5 to 2 inches long from the bulk roll. Match the size to your leader material (Size A for 130-300lb, Size B for 300-600lb).

Step 2: Slide the tubing onto your leader mono or cable BEFORE you attach any hardware. It needs to pass over the bare line.

Step 3: Position the tubing over the crimp sleeve or connection point you want to protect. For swivel joints, center the tubing so it covers the crimp and extends slightly past the sleeve on both sides.

Step 4: Complete your crimp as normal. The chafe gear stays in place over the finished connection. Give it a tug to confirm it covers the full sleeve and any exposed edges.

What is the difference between Size A and Size B chafe gear? +
Size A fits 130-300lb monofilament leader and stainless cable up to 480lb (1/16" diameter). Size B fits 300-600lb mono and 3/32" stainless cable. Check our leader weight chart to match the right size to your target species.
How much chafe tubing do I need per leader? +
Most connections need 1.5 to 2 inches of tubing. A single 10ft roll gives you enough material for 60 to 80 individual connections. If you are rigging a full trolling spread, one roll covers every leader with plenty to spare.
Do I slide the chafe gear on before or after crimping? +
Before. The tubing must slide over bare line before any terminal hardware is attached. Our crimping guide walks through the full sequence step by step.
Can I use chafe gear on wire leaders? +
Yes. Size A fits stainless cable up to 480lb (1/16" diameter) and Size B fits 3/32" cable. For help choosing between wire and mono, read our wire vs mono leaders guide.
What crimp sleeves work with this chafe gear? +
We recommend Double Crimp Copper Sleeves paired with the Epic Hand Crimper. The chafe tubing slides over the finished crimp to protect the connection.
Is bulk chafe gear a better value than pre-cut packs? +
Yes. Pre-cut packs typically give you 5 or 10 short pieces at a higher cost per foot. The 10ft bulk roll at $12.99 lets you cut custom lengths and covers dozens of connections. Check our leader FAQ for more rigging tips.
What leader material should I pair with this chafe gear? +
Size A pairs with Momoi Extra Hard Mono in 130-300lb. Size B works with Momoi Hi-Catch Leader in 300-600lb. Both are proven offshore leaders that crimp and rig cleanly.
Can I use chafe gear for swordfish and deep drop rigs? +
Absolutely. Deep drop rigs take serious abrasion from weight contacts and bottom structure. Chafe gear over every crimp is standard practice. Our swordfish rigging guide covers the full deep drop setup including leader protection.
