The Right Tool for Sewing Baits Offshore

Rigging natural baits properly means sewing them shut so they track straight at trolling speed. You cannot do that with a regular sewing needle - it is too small and bends too easily. Morticians needles have the length, rigidity, and sharp triangular point needed to work through tough bait skin cleanly.

These Addya needles are surgical stainless steel, so they hold their sharpness and resist corrosion. The 4 inch length handles small ballyhoo and strip baits. The 6 inch works for larger baits like bonito and mullet. At 3 per pack, you have backups when one goes overboard or gets dull.

Sharp Triangular Point

The three-sided triangular point cuts through bait skin cleanly instead of tearing it. This matters for rigging ballyhoo mouths and sewing bait bellies shut. A clean hole keeps the bait intact longer while trolling.

Surgical Stainless Steel

The same grade of stainless used in medical instruments. It holds a sharp point, resists saltwater corrosion, and cleans up easily. These do not rust in your tackle bag between trips.

Two Length Options

The 4 inch needle is right for small to medium ballyhoo and strip baits. The 6 inch handles larger baits like mullet, bonito, and big ballyhoo. The extra reach helps when sewing through thicker bait bodies.

How to Sew a Ballyhoo with a Morticians Needle

1. Rig your ballyhoo on the hook and leader first

2. Thread copper rigging wire through the eye of the morticians needle

3. Insert the needle through the lower jaw of the ballyhoo from one side

4. Push it through and out the other side, pulling the wire through

5. Wrap the wire around the bait's bill 3-4 times to close the mouth

6. Twist the wire ends together and trim - the bait should swim straight when pulled through water

What is a morticians needle used for in fishing? +
Morticians needles are used to sew natural baits shut so they track straight while trolling. They work for closing ballyhoo mouths, sewing belly flaps, and threading rigging wire through bait. See our ballyhoo rigging guide for step-by-step instructions.
What size needle do I need? +
The 4 inch works for small to medium ballyhoo and strip baits. The 6 inch handles larger baits like mullet and bonito. If you are not sure, the 6 inch is the more versatile choice. Browse our rigging supplies for more bait rigging tools.
Will these needles rust? +
No. They are surgical stainless steel, the same material used in medical instruments. Rinse with fresh water after use and they last indefinitely. Our Addya stainless dehooker is built from the same quality material.
How many needles come in a pack? +
Each pack contains 3 needles. Having spares matters because needles occasionally get dropped overboard or dulled on tough bait. Our trolling spread guide covers all the rigging tools you need on board.
Can I use these for sewing strip baits? +
Yes. The triangular point works well for threading rigging wire or line through strip baits, belly strips, and bonito chunks. Read our trolling lures guide for more bait rigging techniques.
What thread or wire do I use with these needles? +
Most anglers use copper rigging wire, waxed rigging thread, or light monofilament. Copper wire is the most popular for ballyhoo because it holds shape and does not slip. Our ballyhoo guide shows exactly how to use it.
