Gerber Controller Saltwater Fillet Knife

The Gerber Controller fillet knife is built specifically for saltwater anglers who need a blade that performs in harsh marine conditions. The 9Cr18MoV stainless steel is the same grade used in surgical instruments, and the Salt Rx treatment adds another layer of corrosion defense. Two blade lengths handle everything from panfish to tuna.
    • 9Cr18MoV surgical-grade stainless steel
    • Salt Rx corrosion protection system
    • Flexible blade with mirror polish
    • 8" ($49.99) and 10" ($54.99) blade options

A Fillet Knife That Survives Saltwater

Most fillet knives start rusting after a few saltwater trips. The Gerber Controller is engineered to prevent that. The 9Cr18MoV blade steel maintains its edge and resists corrosion at a level that cheaper steels cannot match. The Salt Rx system adds an antimicrobial treatment to the handle and blade coating.

The flex in the blade is dialed in for fillet work. Enough give to follow the backbone of a mahi or striper, enough stiffness to maintain control through thick cuts. The glass-reinforced polypropylene handle grips securely even when your hands are covered in fish slime. It is a professional-grade tool at a recreational price.

9Cr18MoV Stainless Steel

This is a high-end stainless alloy used in surgical tools. It holds an edge longer than standard stainless, resists corrosion better, and has the right flexibility for fillet work.

Salt Rx Protection

Gerber's Salt Rx system provides an extra barrier against saltwater corrosion and bacterial growth. The treatment covers both the blade and handle for comprehensive protection.

No-Slip Handle

Glass-reinforced polypropylene with an aggressive grip pattern. It stays secure in wet, slimy hands. The ergonomic shape reduces fatigue during long fillet sessions.

How to Fillet Fish with the Gerber Controller

  1. Place fish on a flat, stable cutting surface
  2. Cut behind the gill plate down to the backbone
  3. Turn the blade and run it along the backbone from head to tail
  4. Flip the fillet and remove the rib bones with the flexible blade
  5. Skin the fillet by holding the tail end and cutting between skin and flesh
  6. Rinse the knife and dry after use

10" Blade $54.99

8 inch or 10 inch blade? +
8" handles most inshore and nearshore species well. 10" is better for larger fish like tuna, mahi, and big stripers. If you only buy one, the 10" is more versatile. Browse our fillet knife collection.
What is 9Cr18MoV steel? +
A high-chromium stainless steel used in surgical instruments. It balances edge retention, corrosion resistance, and flexibility better than standard 420 stainless. Our gear guide covers knife materials.
How do I maintain the Salt Rx coating? +
Rinse with fresh water after each use and dry before storage. The Salt Rx treatment is built into the knife and does not wash off, but basic care extends the overall life of the blade. See our knife selection.
Is this knife flexible enough for thin fillets? +
Yes. The blade has good flex for following the backbone and ribcage on species like flounder, trout, and redfish. See our flounder guide for catch-to-table tips.
How does this compare to the folding version? +
The standard Controller has a fixed blade that is more rigid and easier to control. The folding version stores more compactly at 7.25" closed. Fixed blade is better for heavy use.
Does it come with a sheath? +
The fixed blade models include a blade guard. For the full Gerber saltwater lineup including sheaths, check the Rigor Scimitar and Sengyo which include protective sleeves.
