A Solid Hook at a Fair Price

The O'Shaugnessy is one of the oldest and most trusted hook patterns in saltwater fishing. The long shank makes it easy to rig ballyhoo and other natural baits, and the wide gap holds fish once they are hooked. Epic's stainless version gives you corrosion resistance that carbon steel hooks cannot match.

At $1.49 to $2.49 per hook, you can rig a full day's worth of baits without worrying about cost. The knife edge point is sharp out of the package and the ring eye accepts mono, fluoro, and wire leaders cleanly. These are honest hooks that do exactly what they are supposed to do.

Knife Edge Point

The knife edge point is sharpened to penetrate fast on the strike. Less pressure needed means fewer missed hookups, especially on billfish and mahi that hit trolled baits at speed.

Long Shank Design

The extended shank gives you room to rig ballyhoo and other natural baits properly. It also makes hook removal easier, which matters for catch-and-release fishing and when you are releasing undersized fish.

Stainless Steel Construction

Forged stainless steel resists rust and corrosion in saltwater. Unlike carbon steel hooks that start rusting after one trip, these last through multiple sessions. Rinse with fresh water and they are good to go again.

How to Rig a Ballyhoo with an O'Shaugnessy Hook

1. Select the right hook size for your bait - 7/0 for small ballyhoo, 8/0 for medium, 9/0 for large

2. Thread your leader through the ring eye and secure with a crimp or knot

3. Insert the hook point up through the lower jaw of the ballyhoo and out through the top of the head

4. Position the hook shank along the belly of the bait

5. Use copper rigging wire to secure the bait's mouth closed around the leader

6. Test the rig in the water to confirm the bait swims straight at trolling speed

What is an O'Shaugnessy hook used for? +
The O'Shaugnessy pattern is a J-hook with a long shank, wide gap, and slightly offset point. It is popular for rigging ballyhoo, trolling lures, and general bait fishing. Learn the differences in our circle hooks vs J hooks guide.
What size O'Shaugnessy hook do I need? +
The 7/0 (2.5 inch length, 7/8 inch gap) fits small to medium baits. The 8/0 (2.75 inch, 1 inch gap) is the most versatile. The 9/0 (3 inch, 1-1/8 inch gap) handles large ballyhoo and bigger baits. See our hook size chart for detailed comparisons.
Are these hooks stainless or carbon steel? +
These are forged stainless steel, which resists rust and corrosion in saltwater much better than carbon steel. They are built to last through multiple trips. Learn about rigging materials in our live bait rigging guide.
Can I use these hooks for live bait? +
Yes. The long shank and ring eye work well for live bait rigs. However, if regulations require circle hooks for live bait, check your local rules. Our circle hooks vs J hooks guide explains when each type is required.
How do these compare to Mustad O'Shaugnessy hooks? +
Epic's version is comparable quality at a lower price point. Both are forged stainless with similar dimensions. At $1.49 to $2.49 each, Epic gives you strong value for rigging through a full day of trolling. See our full terminal tackle selection.
What leader material works best with these hooks? +
Mono, fluorocarbon, and wire all work well with the ring eye. For offshore trolling, 80-150lb mono or fluoro is standard. For toothy fish like wahoo, use wire. Our leader FAQ covers all the options.
