Blue Water Candy Mylar Bucktail Jig

The Mylar Bucktail Jig from Blue Water Candy adds flash to the most proven lure concept in saltwater. Bucktails have been catching fish for generations. Adding mylar strands to the traditional hair dressing creates extra flash and movement that triggers strikes from cobia, stripers, and other hard-fighting species.
    • Bucktail hair with mylar flash strands
    • 2 oz and 3 oz sizes with Mustad Duratin hooks
    • Four colors: Black/Orange, Purple, Green/Chartreuse, White
    • Made in the USA

Bucktail Plus Flash Equals More Bites

A standard bucktail catches everything. Adding mylar flash to the dressing gives it the extra sparkle that triggers reaction strikes from pressured fish. The mylar strands move independently in the water, creating flashes of light that mimic a fleeing baitfish.

Blue Water Candy builds these in the USA on Mustad Duratin hooks that resist corrosion. The 2 oz size handles moderate current and shallower water. The 3 oz punches through current and gets to the bottom fast in deeper channels. Bounce them off structure, tip with a strip bait or grub, or slow-troll them for cobia.

Mylar Flash Dressing

Mylar strands mixed into the bucktail hair create light reflections that standard bucktails lack. The added flash makes this jig visible from farther away and triggers strikes in both clear and off-colored water.

Mustad Duratin Hooks

Duratin coating resists saltwater corrosion better than standard plating. These hooks stay sharp and functional trip after trip without the rust that kills cheaper jigs.

Made in the USA

Blue Water Candy builds these jigs domestically with quality materials. The hair and mylar are hand-tied for consistent action. Available in Black/Orange, Purple, Green/Chartreuse, and White.

How to Fish a Mylar Bucktail Jig

  1. Select weight based on current and depth
  2. Optionally tip with a strip bait, pork rind, or soft plastic grub
  3. Cast up-current and let the jig sink to the bottom
  4. Retrieve with a lift-and-drop motion, keeping contact with the bottom
  5. Pay attention on the drop - most strikes happen as the jig falls

What species can I catch with a mylar bucktail? +
Striped bass, cobia, bluefish, and false albacore are the primary targets. They also work for flounder when bounced on the bottom. Our striper guide covers bucktail techniques in detail.
Should I tip the jig with bait? +
You can fish it plain, but tipping with a strip of cut bait, pork rind, or a soft plastic grub adds scent and action. Many anglers find tipped bucktails outperform plain ones. See our live bait vs lures guide for more.
2 oz or 3 oz - which should I pick? +
Use 2 oz in lighter current and shallower water under 20 feet. Use 3 oz in heavier current, deeper water, or when you need to stay on the bottom. Our jigging guide has depth-to-weight recommendations.
How is this different from the Spire Bucktail? +
The Mylar Bucktail has a traditional round jig head. The Mylar Spire has a pointed spire-shaped head that cuts through current differently. Both have mylar flash and Mustad Duratin hooks.
Can I troll these? +
Yes. Slow-trolling bucktails at 2-4 knots is a proven cobia technique. They also work trolled for stripers. Check our cobia guide for trolling tips.
What colors work best? +
White is the most versatile and works in any water clarity. Green/Chartreuse shines in stained water. Black/Orange is deadly at dawn and dusk. Purple produces well on overcast days. Browse our full jig selection.
