Mustad 7732SS Short Shank Stainless Steel Hook

The Mustad 7732SS is a short-shank stainless steel hook designed to give dead baits maximum action in the water. The shorter shank is less restrictive to bait movement than longer-shanked alternatives. The shortened barb aids penetration while still retaining fish. Knife edge point and 100% stainless steel construction provide the strength and durability needed for big game applications. Mustad's Nor-Tempering process produces hooks that are lighter and up to 20% stronger. Six sizes from 7/0 to 12/0 cover standard offshore trolling and bait fishing applications. Sold individually.
  • Short shank for natural bait action
  • Shortened barb for fast penetration
  • 100% stainless steel, Nor-Tempered
  • Knife edge point
  • 7/0-12/0 sold individually

Short Shank, Big Bait Action

Dead baits swim better on short-shank hooks. The Mustad 7732SS takes the proven stainless construction and shortens the shank, giving trolled ballyhoo and other baits more explosive, lifelike action. The difference is visible in the water.

The shortened barb is the second design advantage. It penetrates faster on the hookset because there is less material to push through tissue. The barb is still long enough to retain fish through a fight. Combined with stainless steel construction and Nor-Tempering, the 7732SS is a premium bait action hook for anglers who want maximum performance from their natural bait presentations.

Short Shank Design

The shortened shank reduces the rigid metal inside the bait, allowing more natural movement and action in the water. Dead baits trolled on short-shank hooks have visibly more lifelike swimming action than those rigged on long-shank alternatives.

Shortened Barb

The shortened barb penetrates faster because there is less material to push through tissue. The barb still provides reliable retention through long fights. This design balances penetration speed with holding power.

Stainless Steel Nor-Tempered

100% stainless steel will not corrode or weaken over time. The Nor-Tempering process makes the hooks lighter and up to 20% stronger than standard stainless construction. Premium durability for hooks that last season after season.

How to Rig Mustad 7732SS Short Shank Hooks

1. Select size based on bait: 7/0-8/0 for standard ballyhoo, 9/0-10/0 for large baits, 11/0-12/0 for horse ballyhoo

2. Thread your leader through the eye and secure with a crimp or knot

3. Position the hook inside the bait for maximum action

4. The short shank allows the bait to flex naturally behind the hook

5. Deploy on your trolling spread at the desired position

6. Sharpen the knife edge point before each trip

Why a short shank? +
Short shanks give dead baits more natural swimming action by reducing the rigid metal inside the bait. The bait can flex and move more naturally, attracting more strikes. Our hook guide covers shank length benefits.
7732SS vs 7691S? +
The 7732SS has a shorter shank and shortened barb for maximum bait action. The 7691S has a standard shank and full recurve bend for maximum fish retention. Choose the 7732SS when bait action is priority; the 7691S when holding power is priority.
What is a shortened barb? +
The barb is ground shorter than standard, allowing faster penetration on the hookset. The barb is still functional for retaining fish during a fight. The trade-off is slightly easier hook removal, which can be an advantage for catch and release. Our hook guide covers barb types.
What baits work best on short-shank hooks? +
Ballyhoo, mullet, bonito strips, and other trolling baits that benefit from natural swimming action. The short shank lets the bait body flex and swim behind the lure head. Our rigging guide covers bait presentation.
What size for tuna? +
9/0 and 10/0 for yellowfin tuna trolling. 11/0 and 12/0 for large tuna and billfish. 7/0 and 8/0 for smaller offshore species and lighter tackle. Our yellowfin guide covers hook selection.
Stainless vs duratin for trolling? +
Stainless costs more but lasts indefinitely. Duratin hooks like the 7691DT are cheaper but corrode over time. For premium applications where you reuse hooks across multiple trips, stainless is the better value. Our hook guide covers finish selection.
