Mustad 7692DT Forged Offshore Hooks

The Mustad 7692DT is called the tuna hook for good reason. The forged construction and knife edge point are built for big fish that crush lighter hooks. The tapered brazed eye adds strength at the connection point where crimps and leaders attach. Less recurve than the 7691 model means more hookups on dead bait presentations. The hook gives dead baits a natural swimming action at trolling speed. Four sizes from 7/0 to 10/0 cover medium offshore baits through large tuna and marlin presentations. Sold individually so you buy exactly the quantity you need.
  • Forged construction for big fish strength
  • Knife edge point for superior penetration
  • Tapered brazed eye for strong leader connections
  • Less recurve than 7691 for more hookups
  • 7/0 to 10/0 sizes sold individually

The Offshore Hook That Handles Tuna

Standard hooks straighten under the sustained pressure of a big tuna or marlin. The 7692DT is forged specifically to resist that load. The metal is compressed during manufacturing to align the grain structure, creating a hook that bends before breaking and holds its shape under forces that destroy lesser hardware.

The knife edge point penetrates jawbone that dull points bounce off. The moderate recurve gives dead baits a natural swimming action without the excessive curve that costs hookups. At $1.50-$1.99 per hook, the 7692DT delivers tournament-grade performance at a price that makes stocking up easy.

Forged for Heavy Fish

Forging compresses the steel to create a denser, stronger hook than stamped alternatives. The 7692DT handles the sustained load of big tuna runs, marlin jumps, and prolonged fights without straightening. The forged strength-to-weight ratio keeps the hook profile thin enough for clean bait presentations.

Knife Edge Point

The knife edge point penetrates harder than standard cone or rolled points. On offshore species with tough jaw cartilage, point penetration determines whether you hook the fish or bounce off. The knife edge bites immediately on contact.

Tapered Brazed Eye

The eye is tapered and brazed for extra strength at the critical connection point where your leader attaches. Standard open eyes can spread under heavy load. The brazed eye maintains its shape through the strongest fish encounters. It accepts crimps, snells, and loop connections.

How to Rig a Mustad 7692DT for Offshore Fishing

1. Select hook size based on bait: 7/0-8/0 for medium baits, 9/0-10/0 for large baits

2. Crimp or snell the hook to your leader material through the brazed eye

3. Thread the hook through the bait for a swimming presentation

4. Secure the bait with rigging floss or a bait spring

5. Deploy at trolling speed and confirm the bait swims naturally

6. Check the hook point sharpness before every deployment

What is the difference between the 7692DT and 7766DT? +
The 7692DT has a wider gap, heavier wire, and more recurve. It is built for larger baits and bigger fish like tuna. The 7766DT is lighter wire with an elongated shank, better for ballyhoo and smaller bait presentations. Both are excellent offshore hooks for different applications.
Why is this called a tuna hook? +
The forged construction handles the sustained pressure of tuna fights that straighten lighter hooks. The hook shape gives dead baits a natural swimming action that tuna respond to. It works for all offshore species, but tuna anglers adopted it as their standard. Our tuna fishing guide covers hook and rig selection.
What size should I use? +
7/0-8/0 for medium ballyhoo, mackerel, and similar baits. 9/0 for horse ballyhoo and larger dead baits. 10/0 for the biggest bait presentations targeting marlin and large tuna. Our hook size chart has detailed recommendations by bait and species.
Is this a circle hook or J-hook? +
The 7692DT is a J-hook with a moderate recurve. For fisheries requiring circle hooks, use the Eagle Claw L2004EL instead. Read our circle vs J-hook guide to understand when each type is required.
What does brazed eye mean? +
The eye is sealed with a brazing process that fuses the metal closed. This prevents the eye from spreading open under heavy load, which can happen with standard open-eye hooks. The brazed eye is stronger and more reliable for crimped connections. See our crimping guide for leader connection technique.
How does the recurve affect hookups? +
Less recurve (straighter point) means the hook point engages sooner during a strike. The 7692DT has less recurve than the Mustad 7691, which means a higher hookup rate on dead bait presentations. The trade-off is slightly less holding power, but the forged strength compensates. Our bait rigging guide covers hook placement.
Should I buy these or the 7766DT? +
Both are excellent. The 7692DT is better for larger baits and bigger target species (tuna, marlin). The 7766DT is better for ballyhoo and standard trolling presentations. Most offshore boats carry both models in their tackle box.
