Built for the Back Bays

Standard popping corks work great in open water. In back bays, shallow flats, and tight creeks, they can be too large, too loud, and too heavy for the situation. The Back Bay Thunder scales everything down. Smaller body, subtler rattle, lighter weight.

The result is a popping cork that works in skinny water without spooking fish. The internal rattle still calls redfish and sea trout from a distance, but the sound profile is tuned for close-quarters fishing where subtlety matters. At $5.94, stocking all four colors is practical.

Compact Profile

Smaller than standard popping corks for use in shallow water and tight casting spaces. The compact body creates a smaller disturbance on the surface, which is an advantage when fish are in inches of water.

Internal Rattle

The rattle produces a clicking sound on every pop that attracts fish from a distance. The sound profile is tuned for back bay conditions where a subtler approach works better than the heavy clacking of a full-size popping cork.

Weighted for Casting

Internal weight helps the compact body cast well despite its small size. The weight also helps the cork land upright and begin working immediately after the cast.

How to Fish the Back Bay Thunder Popping Cork

1. Rig a 2-3 foot leader below the cork with your preferred soft plastic or live bait

2. Cast to shallow flats, grass edges, oyster bars, or dock lines

3. Pop the cork with short rod tip snaps to create surface disturbance and rattle

4. Pause between pops to let the bait sink and drift naturally

5. Redfish and trout strike on the pause

6. Set the hook when the cork disappears

Brand Precision Tackle
Model Back Bay Thunder

Sound Internal Rattle
Colors Pink, Green, Sunglo, Orange
Price $5.94
What species? +
Redfish and sea trout are the primary targets. The popping cork rig also works for flounder, snook, and other inshore species that respond to surface disturbance. Our redfish guide covers popping cork tactics.
How does this compare to the Cajun Thunder? +
The Back Bay Thunder is smaller and subtler for shallow water. The Cajun Thunder Magnum ($11.99) is a larger 4" cork for deeper water and bigger presentations. Match the cork to your water depth.
What bait under a popping cork? +
Live shrimp is the classic choice. Soft plastic shrimp imitations, paddle tails, and jig head combos all work. Rig on a 2-3 foot leader below the cork. Our redfish guide covers bait selection.
What color? +
Pink and orange are the most visible in all conditions. Green and Sunglo work in clear water. The cork color is primarily for angler visibility rather than fish attraction. Our sight casting guide covers shallow water tactics.
How does this compare to Billy Bay? +
Similar price range. The Back Bay Thunder has an internal rattle and is purpose-built for shallow water. The Billy Bay Low Country Lightning ($5.69) has a different body shape with oval options. Both work for inshore popping cork rigs.
What leader length? +
2-3 feet is standard for most inshore popping cork applications. Shorter (18 inches) in very shallow water. Longer (4 feet) in deeper water or when fish are spooky. Our leader FAQ covers leader setup.
